If “They” Won’t Teach You, Then Teach Yourself

We all know the benefits of companies who provide training to their employees. We even know the popular quote about educating employees:
There is only one thing worse than training employees and losing them, and that’s not training them and keeping them.
Zig Ziglar
The unfortunate thing is companies usually don’t provide career growth training, and if the business is cutting costs, training is the first to be cut. That doesn’t mean that you’re stuck. Remember that your most important business priority is You Incorporated. Don’t wait for someone else to provide classes for you. If “they” don’t offer training and education benefits, then train yourself.

You can always take classes at your local university, and if your location is lucky enough to have a community college, you can take college courses for a fraction of the cost of courses at a state or private university.
What if you are not located near a university? Thanks to technology, there are a number of low-cost online classes that will allow you to learn at your own pace. Sites such as Coursera and edX offer courses from universities such as Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and Berkeley that you can take, and for a small fee, you can get a certificate. Coursera also offers programs to earn your masters degree on-line issued by a particular university. To explore these options, visit the Coursera site or the edX site.
Social media network LinkedIn offers LinkedIn Learning, which offers hundreds of professional development classes to LinkedIn Premium members. The class offers a certificate of completion and a mention on your LinkedIn profile, which will help you show up in more search results from recruiters if you’re looking for a new opportunity.
